Dr. Hilali Noordeen – Consultant Orthopaedic & Spinal Surgeon

Hilali Noordeen has the interesting distinction of being the only living Sri Lankan President of the Oxford Union (1983); the other two, Lalith Athulathmudali and Lakshman Kadirgamar were both assassinated.

Mr. Noordeen is now a reputed and highly sought after consultant spinal surgeon who lives in London. He is also a lecturer and medical consultant who publishes regularly in his field.

He has been a Consultant in Spinal Surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, and at the Children’s Hospital at Great Ormond Street, together with the Princess Grace Hospital and the Portland Hospital, since 1995.

His specialist interests include spinal deformity, which encompasses a large practice including children’s deformity, degenerative adult deformity, and deformity secondary to spinal injury and fractures.

He started work on osteoporotic fractures in the spine in 2001 with a technique called vertebroplasty, moving on to kyphoplasty in 2005.

“My daughter was 3 years old when she was diagnosed with scoliosis. Mr. Noordeen has suggested that she goes for a new technique that’s called (magnetic growth rods) which does NOT require a surgery every 6 months for lengthening the spine. My daughter is 8 months post operation now and she’s done 3 lengthenings already with no pain, no cuts. We thank God that Mr. Noordeen was our daughter’s consultant, and due to his wide knowledge he has advised us to go for the(magnetic growth rods)which saved our daughter lots of pain.” – A Patient Review (London Online)

Mr. Noordeen has authored several peer reviewed articles and book chapters and is editor of the Interactive Spine CD.

He is also a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Orthopaedics and the Institute of Child Health – University College London. He has also received a number of awards for his clinical and research activities such as the 1993 First prize, BOA, Richards/Smith and Nephew Awards, for research – Chester; the 1994 Charles Manning Scoliosis Travel Award and the 1995 ISOLA Prize, Best Scientific Paper, British Scoliosis Society (BSS) Meeting.
