The government has allocated Rs. 10 million for the development of mosques in the Gampaha District, the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs said.
The programme is being implemented in conjunction with the 42nd National Milad-un-Nabi celebrations, with the aim of strengthening religious institutions and promoting coexistence.
The initiative is being carried out by the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs together with the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs.
Meanwhile, a reconciliation programme titled “Welcome to Our Mosque” has also been organised as part of the national Milad-un-Nabi celebrations.
The initiative will provide people of other faiths an opportunity to visit a mosque and learn about its culture, history and religious practices.
In a Facebook post, Minister Vijitha Herath invited the public to take part in the initiative, saying it was aimed at strengthening mutual understanding, respect and goodwill while building bridges of reconciliation towards a united Sri Lanka.
