CIS Condemns US Move to Recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital

The Centre for Islamic Studies (CIS) in a letter sent to The Ambassador of the United States of America in Sri Lanka, Atul Keshup, strongly condemned the US Decision to Recognise Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel, stating that it would invite severe repercussions from the rest of the world.

Ilyas Haniffa, President of CIS, said in the letter:

We in the Muslim world were shocked to learn of President Donald Trump’s Ill advised decision to recognize Holy Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel and to relocate the Embassy of the United States there. As you know, this move is in contravention of international law and is opposed by almost all nations of the world, in Europe, Asia, Africa, Arab World and in the Americas itself.

It is a slap in the face of not only the long-suffering people of Palestine, but in the face of the entire Muslim world and will not go unaddressed.  This move will only strengthen the hands of extremists and boost the arrogance of the Zionists to further trample on the rights of the Palestinian people, both Muslim and Christian.

It will further invite severe repercussions from the Muslim world, including economic boycotts, adverse media campaigns and God forbid, unnecessary harassment of innocent US citizens all over the world. It will bring down the standing of America in Muslim eyes and increase calls for Muslim governments to look elsewhere for political, economic and cultural partnerships, disturbing the good relations we have enjoyed with you thus far.

We urge president Trump to immediately revoke the decision and re-establish the cherished relations we have enjoyed with you for so long and which we are hopeful would continue in the days and years to come- God Willing.
