Barberyn Island

Barberyn Island is situated close to Beruwala town in the south-west coast of Sri Lanka and is 3.25 ha in size.

The island is popular for its 34 m high lighthouse. The lighthouse is known in the names of “Barberyn Lighthouse” and “Beruwala Lighthouse”. The cylindrical white lighthouse, built by the British colonials using granite, was first lit on November 1889. This lighthouse is an archaeologically protected monument which is managed by the Sri Lanka Port Authority. It is one of the four international lighthouses located in Sri Lanka.

The lighthouse was completed in November 1889, and operated by the Imperial Lighthouse Service. In 1969 it was upgraded with the replacement of the old dioptric apparatus and with a pedestal rotating beacon . It was further modernised in 2000, with the introduction of a Differential Global Positioning System and is computer linked to the other major lighthouses around the country. The Barberyn Lighthouse is one of the four international lighthouses in Sri Lanka.
