Western Province Governor, Alavi Moulana said that he is willing to resign from his position as Governor if authorities go ahead and demolish or relocate the mosque in Dambulla.
“Under no circumstance can there be a compromise. If the mosque is relocated it will set a precedence,” Moulana told Ceylon Today.
The Dambulla Khairya Jummah Mosque was attacked by a mob of people led by Buddhist monks on 20 April. The mob demanded the removal of the Islamic mosque alleging that the structure was situated within the Buddhist Sacred Zone in Dambulla which is considered a sacred area by Buddhists.
However, the Mosque has been in existence since the early 1960s and is a revered place of prayer and worship for Muslim devotees of the area
