World Arabic Language Day observed in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO – Arabic Language Day is observed annually on December 18. The event was established by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 2010

The Muslim Schools Development Branch of the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education organized a special program to commemorate International Arabic Language Day.

It was held at the Hajara Hall, Muslim Ladies College, Colombo on Thursday November 21 under the patronage of Principal of the College Mrs. Nazriya Munas.

Director of the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affair M.S.M. Nawaz was present as chief guest. Director of Education, guest of honour Muslim Schools Development Branch Major N.T.Nasumutheen, guest speaker Jamiah Naleemiah Senior Lecturer Ash-Sheikh S.H.M. Faleel and All Ceylon YMMA Conference Past President Saheed M. Rizmy addressed the gathering significance of the Arabic Language.

Ash-Sheikh S.H.M. Faleel emphasized the global, cultural, and religious importance of the Arabic Language during his speech:

Global Usage: Arabic is spoken by over 2 billion Muslims worldwide and is the mother tongue of more than 200 million people, both Muslims and non-Muslims. It is the official language of 22 countries and one of the six official global languages adopted by the United Nations on 18th December 1973, a date now celebrated as World Arabic Language Day.

Also Students spoke about Import of Arabic Language and presented Islamic cultural events at this ceremony.

Principal of the College Mrs. Nazriya Munas presented mementoes to the chief guest, guest of honour and guest speaker on behalf of the College. 

Shashi Prabath Wijerathna, Assistant Director, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Middle East Division, Deputy Principals, Vice Principals, MLC Muslim Majlis teacher in charge Mrs. Farah Shahul Hameed, teachers and students were also present.
