International Women’s Day: The Islamic Perspective By Abubakar Sematimba
As the world celebrates 8th March as International Women’s day, we have to reflect on …
It would be wrong to say that either lost the debate. Both are muslim women, so who lost to whom? These are two opinions and standpoints on the niqaab issue and people are free to take from it what they understand and form their own opinion. What is dangerous and disturbing to see here is that the niqaab is being touted as a Islamic requirement which it is definitely not. It is an adaptation and cultural practice by certain societies to conform to acceptable social behaviour. If a woman want to wear niqaab
she can do it and face the consequences of it and not try to project a moral high road and a superior level of piety and let her defend it on grounds of social and moral principles rather than take cover behind the verdicts and opinions of scholars who are so out of context.
