I am delighted to know that two of the greatest men in jazz – which is great music at its best – John Coltrane and Art Blakey converted to Islam. I would have liked to see the inclusion of Roger Garaudy. He was one of the leading intellectuals in the French Communist Party. I still have with me a book by him which I bought during my Paris days in the first half of the sixties, with chapters on Picasso, the great French poet St John Perse, and a lesser known French painter. Later, in Peking, I read his book on Chinese communism. Later still, in Colombo, I told one of our leading Marxist intellectuals that Garaudy had converted to Islam. He almost fainted. We need to educate our non-Muslim compatriots on the abiding appeal of Islam.
