Govt. warns of organized campaign of racism By The Nation

Certain elements were carrying out an organized campaign of racism within the country with the aim of fostering animosity between different communities, Minister of Mass Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella said.

He claimed these elements were carrying out hate campaigns against communities and were attempting to link such campaigns with the government in an attempt to discredit it.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet press briefing held today, Rambukwella said Muslim politicians, civil society activists, and various Buddhist organizations have made the government aware of these developments. He added the government has directed its attention at these concerns and would take action against any parties involved once more evidence came to light. He appealed to the media to act with responsibility when reporting such developments.

Meanwhile, on a proposal made by the President, a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) is to be appointed to look into extremist, fundamentalist and other forces who are attempting to ignite conflicts.
