The Maldives has tightened visa regulations for foreign workers, ending the practice of entering the country on business or special visas and later switching to work visas.
With effect from September 15, individuals who enter the Maldives on a visa other than a work visa will no longer be permitted to take up employment by subsequently changing their visa status.
The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology said some foreign workers had been using business visas to enter the country and later obtaining work visas to speed up the employment process.
The government has now declared that taking up employment after entering the Maldives on another type of visa will be considered illegal.
Foreign nationals seeking employment in the Maldives must therefore obtain the required work visa before engaging in any employment.
