LONDON (AP) — A British academic who was arrested and held in custody on suspicion of terrorism offenses says he has been paid thousands of pounds in compensation.
Rizwaan Sabir was detained after attempting to print out an al-Qaida manual as part of his research — though police did not disclose how they became aware of his action.
Sabir, a 22-year-old master's student at Nottingham University's politics department, was writing on American attitudes toward to al-Qaida in Iraq and had downloaded the material from a U.S. government website.
He was arrested in May 2008 and spent six days in police custody before being released without charge.
Nottinghamshire police confirmed Wednesday it had agreed on a settlement with Sabir and had paid 20,000 pounds ($31,500) in compensation.
