Founder Editor of Al-Islam newspaper Hamzah Haniffa passed away at a Private hospital in Colombo on Monday Jan.7

Hamzah Haniffa, the founder-editor of the Al-Islam newspaper, was a visionary journalist and a steadfast advocate for the Muslim community in Sri Lanka. A proud old boy of Zahira College, Colombo, during the tenure of Dr. A.M.A. Azeez, Hamzah excelled both academically and athletically, gaining recognition as a skilled wrestler. After graduating from the University of Ceylon,

He graduated from the University of Peradeniya with a bachelor’s degree in Western History. He was both a prize-winning boxer and a wrestler and served as the captain of the Marrs Hall wrestling team. He was a finalist in the inaugural Mr. Campus contest and played an active role in the University Muslim Majlis.

He began his career as a teacher at his alma mater before transitioning to journalism. His work with the Daily News and later the Hong Kong Herald honed his skills, setting the stage for the creation of his own newspaper, Al-Islam.

In January 1966, Hamzah and his contemporary, Deen, also a Zahira College alumnus, launched Al-Islam to address the long-felt need for a newspaper championing Islamic causes. Both men shared a love for wrestling, physical culture, and journalism, pooling their resources to establish the publication. Producing the newspaper involved countless challenges, with Hamzah and Deen often working late into the night to bring their vision to life. Despite the difficulties, Al-Islam quickly gained prominence as a weekly newspaper that resonated not only with the Muslim community but also with a broader audience across Sri Lanka.

Hamzah’s fearless approach to journalism earned him immense respect. He consistently highlighted social and communal issues, advocating for the Muslim cause without political prejudice. His dedication to preserving Islamic values and addressing societal challenges left a lasting impact.

Hamzah passed away on January 7, leaving behind a legacy of service and leadership. He was laid to rest at the Dehiwela Muslim Burial Grounds, marking the end of a life devoted to uplifting his community and promoting justice through journalism.
