As Sri Lanka commemorates its 77th Independence Day this year, marking its transformation into a free nation in 1948 after nearly 350 years of colonial rule under the Portuguese, Dutch, and British since 1597, the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama releases this message.
We remember the unity, courage, perseverance, patriotism, and sacrifices of our forefathers who fought for independence without discrimination of race, religion, or language. Their exemplary qualities as national heroes should inspire the citizens of this nation to adopt these values in their lives.
Self-governance is the essence of democracy; however, true freedom lies in enabling all citizens to live in peace, regardless of who governs. Every citizen must recognize that the freedom won by our ancestors is a shared heritage belonging to everyone born in this land, those yet to be born, and those who hold its citizenship.
As each year passes, the number of years since independence increases. However, true celebration comes not from merely counting these years but by ensuring that no individual, community, or group faces oppression or exploitation of national resources. True happiness and freedom lie in fostering a nation where every community enjoys their rightful religious, social, political, and economic freedoms.
Some nations, despite possessing limited resources, have achieved remarkable development and risen as global leaders. Meanwhile, our resource-rich nation lags behind due to poor governance and mismanagement, reflecting a freedom that lacks true liberation.
It is imperative for all citizens to unite, fostering harmony, peace, and brotherhood while driving comprehensive development and advancing social welfare. Together, we can elevate our nation to rank among the happiest, safest, and most livable countries in the world. To fully enjoy the freedom our forefathers fought for, we must first cultivate moral values and cultural refinement within every individual.
On this significant occasion of the 77th Independence Day, the ACJU prays for Almighty Allah’s blessings to guide the new generation to become patriotic, healthy, skilled, and content citizens.
May our nation flourish, and may coexistence thrive!
