Campus Masjid at Peradeniya

The long-felt need for a Masjid in the University of Peradeniya (former University of Ceylon) was fulfilled when the Masjid was completed in 1971, although the foundation stone was laid in 1952. It was built with the effort and support of a group of Muslim intellectuals,graduates, undergraduates and philanthropists. Alhamdulillah the Masjid was incorporated as a registered charity by the Act of Parliament of the Democratic Socialist of Sri Lanka in 1983(Act No.42 of 1983) 

The Perdeniya University Masjid consists of a prayer hall, a cultural center, an Islamic Library and a six roomed hostel for about 12 male students. The Masjid stands as an attractive building with elegant features within the university in spite of a poor state of maintenance. 

This is the only University Masjid found in Sri Lanka despite there are 13 other Universities in the country.Therefore this Masjid can be considered as a National asset of the entire Community. 

The responsibility of preserving and maintaining, lies in the entire community. So far the Masjid does not have a regular income and the income from six room hostel is hardly enough to pay the Electricity and the water bill.

The Masjid is in a deplorable position and needs urgent repairs specially the flat roof and the dome. The Masjid, even though it was recently tiled by NOLIMIT Co. but have been neglected to an extent that monkeys visit the Masjid regularly and misuse the prayer hall.

Recent visit by Sailan Muslim officials were shocked and promptly arranged with the University Masjid Association (UMA), the Peradeniya University Masjid Management Committee (PUMMC) and the University Muslim Majlis, to clean the surrounding, install new netting to prevent ingress of monkeys and awarded the contract to repair the roof and the dome. This was the kind gesture from ZAMGEMS of Kandy. Quotation to repair and repaint the Majid will be taken up shortly.

Sailan Muslim urges all the ex-graduates of this University to join hands in maintaining the Masjid. We request the graduates of this University to register with the University Majlis, so as to form an Association of the Muslim Graduates of Peradeniya University.
