WAY OF LIFE’ LEADING TO ‘LIVE FOR OTHERS’, By A.G.A.Barrie P.Eng.

way-to-liveWe are Muslims, Alhamdulillah. Thus the way of life is pre-planned for us and it is up to us to follow the real way, as prescribed by Islam. In today’s world, one full of turmoil, it is more than essential to stay true to Islamic principles. Unfortunately we Muslims are at a stalemate with each other mainly due to greed and jealousy. If we can eradicate these two evils from our daily life, we can be the viceroy of the Earth, as required by Allah. As for myself, I have tried to practice one of the basic principles in the Islamic way of life. That principle being‘living for others.’ It is not easy to maintain such a practice in daily life but like anything in this life once you have set your mind to it, the rest falls into place. But the key is to train yourself early on in life. That is why I hope for this article to be directed to people of all ages and at all stages of life. May Allah help and guide everyone to acquire this fundamental and essential quality in life so that we will all accomplish the resulting of peace of mind at the end of our tenure. This principle is a basic requirement to meet the creator, of course after living as a Muslim. But one cannot achieve this overnight; they have to prepare for it from inception. The following listed are some basic acts and etiquette one can implement at the various stages of our lives to achieve the blessed principle of living for others.

CHILDHOOD

  • Learn to share your toys.
  • Help other children when they are in difficulty.
  • Be kind and cheerful when you are with others.
  • Be satisfied and do not be a burden to parents.
  • Be proud to be a Muslim child.

STUDENT

  • Be consistent in your habits.
  • Learn to manage your time properly.
  • Be a sportsman and learn to accept defeat like gentlemen,
  • Do your schoolwork, while helping others find the little pleasures in life.
  • Live within your means.
  • Learn to be humble when you excel.

AT WORK

  • Be exemplary.
  • Work more than you have been contracted for.
  • Do not live on others fault, but solve them as if they are yours.
  • Volunteer to help others and refrain from complaining.
  • Be pleasant in the presence of others.
  • AT HOME
  • Be a leader and set examples, so that others will follow.
  • Be kind, firm and understanding.
  • Treat all alike, have no favourites.
  • Admire achievements and punish faults.
  • Give the best to your family.

Once you have the basics then you live through the code of Islam. It is important to realize and accept the fact, “All what you do and think are known to Allah” and you will not attempt to displease him. You are only a passenger in this journey to meet the Creator. With this concept you act and live to please Allah. How is that possible? Well, we have to have few fundamentals correct:

  1. Earning

This is the most important factor to lead a peaceful life. Your earning should only be through proper and Halaal means. Your conscious is the answer to this. Anything you have doubts for in your heart, keep away from. Feeding the family and helping others should come from a properly earned income. If you are paid to work for 8 hours and you only work for 7 hours, then the salary you get is questionable. In my opinion, your earnings and their means are the baseline to living through the code of Islam, it reflects your morals and how you perceive everything in your life.

  1. Disposal

Having earned properly, it is equally important to dispose the earnings in the suitable way. This is the difficult part but if you are in the path of pleasing the Creator, it is not difficult at all. Keep for your basic needs and give away the balance, starting from your immediate needy kin. You have to realize that you cannot have everything when your close relatives and associates around you do not even have the basics. If you practice this phenomena all your needs are met by the help of the Creator and you will achieve peace of mind. Alhamdulillah.

SUMMARY

Follow the path of Allah, as shown to us by our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Fear Allah and Allah alone!
