YMMA CONFERENCE GRANTS 150 SCHOLARSHIPS

The All Ceylon YMMA Conference, as one of its major projects , will be granting 150 Scholarships to 150 Students sitting for the G.C.E. (O/L) and (A/L) Examinations in 2011/2012.

The Ceremony to handover these ScholarshipS will be held on Saturday 19th March 2011 at the YMMA Conference , Dr. A.M.A. Azeez Auditorium starting from 9.a.m.. Students from various parts of the country are due to converge at the YMMA Conference Headquarters to receive the Award.

The aim of this project is to help and assist poor and deserving students to pursue their studies without dropping out. Quite a large number of good but poor students drop out from various schools for want of funds/abject poverty thereby they are forced to discontinue studies. Taking this phenomena into consideration YMMA Conference decided to embark on this project by granting 150 or more scholarships ( depending on Donor funding capacity ) to these poor  but deserving and talented students to prevent them from dropping out from Schools.

" It has worked and achieves results and we are happy at that". A Donor remarked.

Many a students have benefited from this scheme over the last 10 years. Earlier the YMMA Conference awarded scholarships to University students also but had to shelve this scheme due to these students receiving multiplicity of Scholarships rewards from other Government and Non-Government sources as far as University education is concerned.

G.C.E. (Ordinary Level) and Advanced Level Examination studies are more or less foundation study courses which will pave the way to find different avenues of higher education and/or vocational studies in various disciplines. Hence the YMMA Conference thought that it would be worthwhile to grant scholarships to these students.

The grant involves donation of a sum of Rs. 750/- for O/L students and Rs. 1000/- for A/L students each month for 12 months.

These students were selected from among the most deserving and from the best of the best at various interviews held in Colombo Kandy Puttalam Batticoloa and Amparai in the Eastern Province a few months ago. The recipients apply through their respective Branch YMMAs.

Mr. K.N. Deen, Vice President of the YMMA Conference spearheads this project. The Interview Board consisted of Messrs. Cader M. Ali and M. Ashroff Rumi ( Past Presidents) assisted by Mr. M.R.M. Ziyard, the newly elected National General Treasurer who visited these areas to interview and select the recipients.

Mr. Nadvi Bahaudeen National President of the All Ceylon YMMA Conference was instrumental in getting major part of the required funding for the purpose.

It should be noted that majority of the Scholarship recipients are Girls. Whilst not denying the right of the girls in receiving scholarships, we need to encourage more boys to pursue higher education in as much as they are the breadwinners and head of a family. Boys do not run the risk of discontinuing higher education or employment. Whereas on the other hand even an educated girl runs the risk of discontinuing their education and/or employment due to various factors such as marriage, pregnancy, babysitting, nature of their husbands, parents reluctance and other family issues etc.

FATWA –  Donation for Educational Purpose falls part of your ZAKATH

YMMA Conference has obtained a Fatwa from Sri Lanka Jemiyathul Ulema ( the highest authoritative and recognized body of Islamic Theologians in Sri Lanka) that all monies contributed for Educational Purpose falls part of the Zakath. Therefore those who are liable to pay Zakat could consider paying whole or part of their Zakat funds to the All Ceylon YMMA Conference to be spent on granting Educational Scholarships to needy and deserving students.

Those willing to donate may send the Cheque written in favour of : All Ceylon YMMA Conference. They could write on the back of the cheque the purpose of the donation – Educational Scholarship Purpose Only.
