Noureddine Bazine, a journalist who is also a Marrakesh resident, said the earthquake was “sudden and catastrophic” for the residents of the city.
“We lived a horrific night full of nightmares; we are not used to such disasters,” he said, adding that the highest number of deaths was in the region of al-Haouz.
He also said: “In Marrakesh, the highest damage was in the old city, because the buildings are prone to collapse, and some of them can collapse even without an earthquake due to their fragile state.”
“The death toll is likely to increase even more,” he added.
‘Many buildings collapsed in the old city of Marrakesh’
Mohamed, a resident in Marrakesh, said that he was in his apartment on the third floor of his building when the earthquake happened.
“It suddenly and violently started shaking. I escaped and was safe … Only books or pieces of art fell from the shelves,” he said.
He said: “Many old buildings were collapsed in the old city of Marrakesh. The suburbs of Marrakesh were hugely affected by the earthquake. Most of casualties are recorded in the surrounding rural communes and outskirts.”
