Sadakathul Jariya Wells – Kinniya By M.M.Khalid

With the crushing defeat of the LTTE in 2009, once again Sri lanka returned to an era of peace. At this point, A.G.A. Barrie from Canada inquired if we could now help the Muslims who suffered severe atrocities under the LTTE terrorists.  Firstly by constructing wells and providing them with life giving water. He also wanted to know the location of these wells to be built and how much it would cost. I informed him that  Kinniya suffered most as about 85 civilians in this area were killed by the LTTE and  450  died (highest death toll) from the Tsunami of 2004. The cost would depend on both the depth and width of the wells. He said he will collect Rs. 50,000/- from each donor for a well and for me to start with the construction. I met with the village elders and discussed a plan to also harness the labour of the recipients so that they would appreciate the gift. In fact they told me that if people as far away in Canada, UK, and Colombo are willing to make this commitment of Sadaka gift;  they will be more than willing to  help themselves by providing the labour required. At this point it must be emphasized that Islam is a commitment to serve Allah Subhanhuwwa Tha’ala’s purpose and is not just another religion.

As funds started to trickle in, work immediately began and we completed 9 wells 2009. When I went to see the work in progress we noticed the wells were between 30 and 35 feet deep and about 8 feet wide, with plenty of clean drinking water and  worth approximately 100,000/-. Since each household had sufficient land for some form of agriculture and animal husbandry; we requested that the wells serve this duel purpose. Today they are self supporting citizens standing on their own feet- Masha Allah. This year we completed a further 12 wells bringing the total to 21 (twenty one) wells.

Prior to the construction of a well; water samples from a bore hole are collected and a detailed  location map is submitted by the applicant for approval by the local council. The end result of all this is that we have built small SUSTAINABLE communities in  Kinniya,  who are today standing on their own feet. They are emotionally moved when they greet us. Three officials of Seylan Muslim Foundation and their wives, visited Kinniya last year and were pleased with what they saw. Personal letters of gratitude were given to the donors by each of the recipients.

Shakespeare said in one of his plays, “ the good that men do are often interred with their bones;  but it is the evil that lives after them. Islam however takes a different view – when someone dies his evil stops but three good deeds lives after him. (a). I goodly off spring who is God fearing and a benefit to society, (b) The contribution of some knowledge or wisdom from which society benefits, and (c) the gift of some tangible or intangible thing to society from which it continuously benefits (such as a well, a school, a hospital a fund, etc). Allah Subhanahuwwa tha’ala says in the the Holy Quran “ We will try you with your family and your wealth” Hence we must understand that our life on this earth is a trial for which he has made some less fortunate than the others so that we support and help each other. Since he says again in the Holy Quran “ Give me a beautiful loan for which I shall make a tenfold increase.” Allah the Almighty and the owner of both the heavens and the earth does not need anybody’s help whatsoever but seeks this loan. Think about it? Yes, He tries us with our every breath. Islam is not just another religion – it is a COMMITMENT.  So if you want to make your commitment to this wells project, kindly send them to A.G.A.Barrie c/o Seylan Muslim Foundation.  SHUKRAN  – Alhamdulillah.
